Friends partners with Borders
to increase funds raised for library
In a pilot community-outreach program, the Rancho Santa Margarita Friends of the Library will have designated “Benefit Days” at the RSM Borders. On those days, when Friends of the Library supporters shop at Borders, Borders will donate a percent of the sale to Friends of the Library. In order for Friends of the Library to get credit for the sale, library supporters will need to show a bar-coded bookmark, which they can pick up at the FOL Bookstore.
The first Benefit Days will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14 through Saturday, Sept. 18. Benefit Days for the RSM Library will continue Friday and Saturday, October 8-9, and November 12-13. Read more about the program and download the bar-coded flyer to take with you to Borders.
Who We Are, What We Do
Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization of volunteers who raise money to support the Rancho Santa Margarita Public Library. All members volunteer their time and financial support so that children and adults can enjoy this precious resource. The primary source of funds comes from sales in the Friends of the Library Bookstore, which is overseen by a Board of Directors and operated by the volunteers who staff the bookstore in two-hour shifts. We also hold semi-annual two-day booksales in the Library's Community Room, usually in May and November.
In 2009, Friends of the Library raised more than $100,000 for RSM Library use. This Rancho Santa Margarita Friends of the Library chapter is the only outside resource for meeting our library's needs. Friends of the Library pays for children’s and adult programming, craft materials, speakers, prizes for various contests and reading incentives, paperback books, audio books and much more. Major purchases funded by Friends of the Library include:
- New chairs for the children's section
- Replacement drive-up book return
- New chairs for the Community Room
- Expansion shelving for the library
- Digital scanner for microfilm/microfiche and flatbed scanner.
As the county funding for libraries continues to decline, the role of Friends of the Library becomes more and more important. Friends of the Library is a 501c(3) tax exempt organization so every donor is entitled to claim a tax deduction for each gift to the FOL.
